A BaptistCare Home Care worker reflects on 24 years in the profession.
People often ask us, what makes working in aged home care so incredibly rewarding? We think these beautiful words, shared by a BaptistCare home care worker with more than 24 years' experience, sum it up just perfectly.
“I’m a BaptistCare Home Care worker.
I get to spend quality time with your grandma, grandpa, mother, father, aunt, or uncle. I get to be the first one to say good morning beautiful human, show them love, kindness and respect.
I make breaky, cook the evening meals, help them sort clutter out, clean their houses. I assist with showers, guide them through the world of technology, google weather details, make appointments on their behalf.
I hold their hand and make them feel safe in overwhelming environments.
I get to just sit and spend quality time talking about the old days. We go shopping, buy clothes, and do what they want.
We watch the ocean while drinking coffee, paint nails, style hair, and of course... do makeup.
I give them the independence to stay in their homes for as long as they can.
I’m not just a carer, I’m a friend, an ally, an advocate, a hand to hold when they are afraid, a social worker, and sometimes, the last face your loved one sees. I’m one of your relative's favourite people and they trust me.
My job is amazing, and I have been a care worker for 24 years with this organisation.
I miss those that have passed and care deeply for those still present. I’m a ‘Community Care Worker’ whose pay may not resemble the quality care I give to your loved ones, but that’s ok because I have the most rewarding job for me.
I’ll never skimp on giving 100 percent of my kindness, love, and respect to the ones you love. They are some of my favourite humans, I’m the one blessed in this life.”
