Community Development Coordinator - Youth | Permanent Full-time

Our Youth Centre supports young people to develop their creativity, build life skills and obtain education.

When community through community development initiatives and individual support. We do this through our multidisciplinary team where we aim to build meaningful relationships through our community spaces, such as our HopeStreet Café, Op Shop, Youth Centre, and reception area. Our aim is to empower community who may be experiencing marginalisation through community led and driven activities, so that they can facilitate and take ownership of desired positive outcomes.

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Alongside the Community Development Team, build safe and positive relationships with young people to provide mentoring and support
  • Design and implement engaging programs with and for young people that fulfil the Centre’s goals of supporting young people to: obtain education, develop independence, feel a sense of belonging, grow in confidence, develop skills and achieve their goals
  • Organise facilitators to deliver programs at the Centre as needed
  • Lead and supervise Centre volunteers, as well as trainees, interns and students where appropriate
  • Refer young people to additional services (e.g. case management, health services).
  • Meaningfully engage with and consult young people, their families and the broader Woolloomooloo community to identify strengths, interests and aspirations
  • Work with the Community Development team, other local stakeholders and local residents to implement asset-based, community-led projects & programs
  • Attend community events, and work with the Community Development team to host events that build community
  • Engage with and support the local primary school, Plunkett St Public, through provision of extra-curricular activities
  • Liaise with local high schools to support school attendance strategies
  • Network with other local service providers to establish referral pathways

Essential qualifications, experience & competencies:

  • Qualifications in Community Services, Social Work, Counselling or other relevant fields (Diploma minimum) 
  • Degree, certificate, or experience in Community Services, Community Development, Youth Work, Social Work, Psychology, or relevant discipline 
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth and families experiencing marginalisation and vulnerability 
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of child protection and mandatory reporting
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding of and commitment to social justice & community development
  • Ability to work from trauma-informed, strengths-based and harm minimisation frameworks
